Trout
Artist Statment
"I was afraid to paint at first—I didn’t know how. But I just started with the pastel on large four foot by six swatches of paper. I played around with it for awhile, then painted on canvas. As a self-taught artist, it’s been a lifelong process of figuring things out as I go."
The trout series was Tom’s transition into being a multi-medium artist. Up to that point, he had been working as a full-time stained-glass artist. Inspired by the trout he caught fly-fishing on the Yuba River, Tom decided to capture the sleek lines and iridescent colors of this fish through a different medium.
Ranging from large pastel drawings to acrylic paintings on canvas, these still life renderings capture the beauty of fresh water's best type of catch, juxtaposed on different backgrounds.
